Sundance Film Festival
Sundance puts a film industry's worth of people into Park City, a small ski town at altitude, in the middle of winter. Main Street closes to normal traffic, venues are scattered across the Wasatch Back, and the schedule runs from early screenings to late parties.
The journey from Salt Lake City is the part people underestimate. It is around forty minutes in good conditions up Parley's Canyon on I-80, and considerably more in snow — which in late January is the normal case, not the exception.
Getting Around Sundance Film Festival
The canyon is weather-dependent
I-80 through Parley's Canyon can slow dramatically or come under chain control in a storm. An early start matters more than a fast vehicle.
Main Street is closed
Park City restricts Main Street during the festival, so drop-off happens at the edges and the venues are reached on foot or by the local shuttle.
Venues are spread out
Screenings, panels and parties run from Park City to Kimball Junction and down into the valley. Days involve a lot of short, awkward movements.
Altitude and cold
Park City sits around 7,000 feet. Waiting outside for a car in January at altitude is genuinely unpleasant, and an arranged vehicle matters more than it would in a city.

Can you get onto Main Street?
Not during the festival — it is closed. We drop at the nearest open point and tell you the walk.
Do you use winter-capable vehicles?
Yes, SUVs are the default for Park City in January for good reason.
